How a disposal grinds food
A disposal uses a spinning plate with impellers to break food into small pieces that flush through the drain. Water carries the waste away.
Running cold water during and after grinding keeps the waste moving and the motor cool.
Why disposals fail
Most failures come from jams, worn motors or leaking seals. Grease and hard food scraps speed up wear.
A leaking body means replacement, because the seal cannot be repaired.
Safe care you can do
Never put your hand into a disposal. Switch off the breaker first, and use pliers to clear a jam.
Call a plumber for leaks, wiring or a motor that will not run.
